We promote the public appreciation and playing of pipes and drums through fellowship, performance, competition, and continuous development of skills. We have an active, ongoing educational program providing musical workshops and scholarships to members and non-members alike. In its pursuit of excellence, the Schenectady Pipe Band has been competing in contests at Scottish games throughout the Eastern United States and Canada, as well as in Scotland. Many members also choose to compete in solo competitions. These events not only reward individual achievements, but also offer incentive to further improve playing skills. From the beginning, the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band has played music that has included repertoire considered outside the pipe band norm. In fact, the 78th has thrived on the continuing musical challenges placed before them.

Since it’s inception, the band has maintained high standards of piping, drumming and teaching, bringing the traditions and love of Highland music to the community. We are a Not for Profit Band whose mission is to pass on our legacy of teaching and playing the pipes and drums. We have a well earned reputation as a teaching band and many former band members have gone on to further their careers as pipers and drummers.

The Sons of Scotland, formed in 1896 by D.L. McLean, is Canada’s oldest civilian pipe band. James Anderson led the band in the early 1900s. The band played in Ottawa for the first time in 1896 in celebration of the death of Robert Burns. It was in fact the first pipe band to be heard in the nation’s capital. Unfortunately, little is known about the band’s early activities.

Founded in 1927, the Fergus Pipe Band has a long and proud history. In the formative years, J.W. (Jack) MacDonald served as piping instructor and acting pipe major, and J.W. Henderson Sr. was drumming instructor. In 1930, Thos. Patterson, formerly with the Guelph Pipe Band, assumed the position of pipe major. Thos. MacDonald, an experienced drummer with highland regiments and a World War I veteran, took over the duties of drumming instructor.
